“and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they were arrogant, and didn’t listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances (which if a man does, he shall live in them), turned their backs, stiffened their neck, and would not hear.”
What does Nehemiah 9:29 mean?
This passage captures a painful cycle: God kept sending messengers to call His people back to obedience, but they refused to listen. Instead of turning around, they grew more stubborn, literally and spiritually turning their backs on both God and the way of life He offered them. The phrase about living by God's ordinances isn't a threat but an invitation, a reminder that following God's guidance leads to genuine flourishing. Yet the people chose arrogance and a hardened resistance instead. This describes something many of us recognize in our own lives, too: the moment when we know we're going the wrong direction but our pride keeps us locked in place, unable or unwilling to turn back toward what's good for us. What makes this honest and hopeful is that it's part of a prayer of confession. By naming this painful pattern, God's people are acknowledging both their failure and their need for His mercy. Sometimes we need to sit with how stubborn we've been before we can genuinely change direction.
