Nehemiah 9:22

Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted according to their portions. So they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

What does Nehemiah 9:22 mean?

This verse recalls how God gave the Israelites victory over powerful kingdoms during their wilderness wandering and conquest of Canaan. Sihon and Og were formidable rulers whose lands stood between the Israelites and their promised home, yet God enabled them to inherit these territories. The prayer here is reminding God (and the community praying it) of his faithfulness in providing not just survival, but actual land, homes, and security for his people. It's a way of saying, "You didn't just rescue us from Egypt, you actually gave us a place to belong," which would have been deeply meaningful to the Jewish people who first prayed this during their own difficult season of exile and return.
