Nehemiah 8:10
“Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.””
What does Nehemiah 8:10 mean?
Nehemiah is speaking to people who have just heard God's law read aloud after years of exile, and they're overwhelmed with conviction about their failures. Rather than let them spiral into shame, he redirects them toward celebration and generosity. He's saying: feast, enjoy good things, share with those who have nothing, and remember that this day belongs to God. The heart of the message is that joy isn't selfish indulgence, but a real source of strength for living faithfully. When we're depleted by guilt or despair, we actually become weaker in our ability to follow God and serve others. There's wisdom here for anyone carrying heavy emotions: sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is step back from our self-examination, receive something good, and let ourselves experience gladness. That restoration of spirit is what equips us to keep going.
