What does Nehemiah 7:44 mean?
This simple line is part of Nehemiah's careful census of the people returning from exile in Babylon. The singers of Asaph were a specific guild of musicians responsible for leading worship in the rebuilt Temple, and their numbers mattered because worship was central to rebuilding Jewish life and faith. What's beautiful here is that among all the lists of priests, gatekeepers, and workers needed to restore Jerusalem, the singers get their own mention. This tells us that God's people recognized music and praise as essential to their community, not optional.
