What does Nehemiah 7:40 mean?
This brief line is part of Nehemiah's census of people returning from exile in Babylon to rebuild Jerusalem. The descendants of Immer were a priestly family whose ancestors had served in the temple before it was destroyed, and this count shows that over a thousand of them made the journey home. It's easy to skip over these genealogies, but each number represented real families choosing to return and help restore their broken city and faith community.
