Nehemiah 7:3
“I said to them, “Don’t let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut the doors, and you bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his watch, with everyone near his house.””
What does Nehemiah 7:3 mean?
Nehemiah is giving practical security instructions to the people rebuilding Jerusalem's walls after exile. He's asking them to keep the gates closed until mid-morning (when the sun is hot), partly as a safety measure and partly to ensure the guards are alert and present before letting anyone enter or leave. He wants the community itself, living in different sections of the city, to take responsibility for watching over the areas near their own homes. This reflects both ancient military wisdom and something deeper: that a community's safety comes when ordinary people care for the places where they actually live. Nehemiah isn't trying to lock people in or shut them out permanently, but rather to be intentional and aware.
