What does Nehemiah 7:26 mean?

This simple census entry records how many people from two small towns returned to Judah after the exile in Babylon. Bethlehem and Netophah were villages near Jerusalem, and their residents were among those who chose to rebuild their homeland and restore worship in the temple. The number—188 people—might seem modest, but it represents real families making the courageous choice to leave behind the only home some had ever known and return to an uncertain future. These kinds of lists in Nehemiah remind us that God sees and counts every person who takes a step of faith, no matter how ordinary they might seem to the world.
