Nehemiah 5:9
“Also I said, “The thing that you do is not good. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?”
What does Nehemiah 5:9 mean?
Nehemiah is confronting wealthy Jewish leaders who are charging interest to their own people during a famine, essentially taking advantage of their neighbors' desperation. His challenge cuts to the heart of the matter: this behavior contradicts who they're supposed to be as God's people and damages their witness to the surrounding nations watching them. When Nehemiah asks if they should "walk in the fear of our God," he's not talking about being afraid, but about living with reverence and respect for God's character and commands.
