What does Nehemiah 4:3 mean?
Tobiah's mocking words reveal the despair the rebuilding project faced. Jerusalem's walls had been destroyed for decades, and when Nehemiah and the Jewish exiles began restoring them, their enemies seized every chance to discourage the effort. Tobiah's joke about a fox toppling the walls was meant to humiliate the workers and suggest their labor was worthless. What makes this moment powerful is that the workers pressed on anyway.
