What does Nehemiah 2:14 mean?
Nehemiah is walking the ruins of Jerusalem's walls at night, inspecting the damage done when the city was conquered. He's riding a donkey through the wreckage, and at this point the destruction is so severe—with rubble piled everywhere—that there's literally no clear path for his animal to move forward. It's a small detail that paints a vivid picture of how completely devastated the city has become. This moment of being literally stopped in his tracks seems to deepen Nehemiah's understanding of the work ahead and strengthen his resolve to rebuild what has been lost. Sometimes we need to see the full extent of brokenness before we can commit to restoration.
