What does Nehemiah 11:15 mean?

This verse is part of a list showing who returned to Jerusalem after the exile in Babylon and the rebuilding of the temple. Shemaiah and his ancestors were Levites, the priestly tribe set apart to help with worship and temple service. Names and genealogies mattered deeply to the returning community because they proved people belonged to their tribes and could claim their rightful place in restored Jerusalem. Reading through these family lines reminds us that God saw each person's story and remembered his people, even after they'd been scattered far from home.
