“Cush and Egypt were her boundless strength. Put and Libya were her helpers.”
What does Nahum 3:9 mean?
Nahum is describing the fall of Nineveh, the mighty capital of Assyria, and he's reminding his audience just how powerful this city once seemed. By mentioning Cush (modern-day Sudan), Egypt, Put, and Libya, he's saying that even with all these wealthy nations as allies and sources of military strength, Nineveh still couldn't stand against God's judgment. These were some of the most formidable powers of the ancient world, yet their combined support meant nothing in the end. The point isn't really about geography or ancient politics, but rather about how fragile power becomes when it's built on anything other than righteousness, and how even the grandest human alliances crumble before God's purposes.
