Nahum 3:17
“Your guards are like the locusts, and your officials like the swarms of locusts, which settle on the walls on a cold day, but when the sun appears, they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.”
What does Nahum 3:17 mean?
Nahum is picturing the leaders and defenders of Nineveh (the capital of the Assyrian empire) as locusts that vanish without a trace. Just as locusts cluster together when it's cold but scatter instantly when warmth comes, these officials and soldiers will abandon their posts and disappear when trouble arrives, leaving no one to defend the city. The image captures how quickly power and protection can evaporate, and how those who seemed numerous and formidable turn out to be unreliable when they're actually needed. For people facing uncertain times or unstable leaders, it's a reminder that earthly authorities are fragile, and that our real security comes from trusting God rather than human power.
