Nahum 3:14
“Draw water for the siege. Strengthen your fortresses. Go into the clay, and tread the mortar. Make the brick kiln strong.”
What does Nahum 3:14 mean?
The prophet Nahum is mocking the desperate preparations of Nineveh, the great Assyrian city facing destruction. He's essentially saying: "Go ahead and get ready for siege—draw your water, reinforce your walls, make your bricks—as if any of it will save you." There's biting irony here, because despite all their frantic efforts at self-defense, their fate is already sealed. For those of us facing overwhelming circumstances, this verse speaks to a hard truth: sometimes we can do everything right and still face outcomes we can't control. It's not a call to give up, but rather an invitation to recognize when our efforts alone aren't enough, and to look beyond our own strength. That's where faith enters, in the place where our defenses finally admit their limits.
