What does Nahum 2:1 mean?

Nahum delivered this urgent call to Judah as the Assyrian Empire, which had brutally conquered the northern kingdom of Israel decades earlier, now threatened the south. The prophet uses vivid military language, telling the people to prepare their defenses and gather their courage because a powerful enemy is advancing. "Strengthen your waist" is an ancient expression for bracing yourself physically and mentally, like tightening your belt before battle or hard work. Though the immediate crisis was political and military, Nahum's message carried a deeper truth: when we face overwhelming threats, we're called to do what we can do (prepare, stay alert, build community strength) while trusting that God sees our struggle and hasn't abandoned us.
