Micah 4:9
“Now why do you cry out aloud? Is there no king in you? Has your counselor perished, that pains have taken hold of you as of a woman in travail?”
What does Micah 4:9 mean?
God speaks here to Jerusalem through the prophet Micah, pointing out that the people are crying out in despair as if they've lost all their resources and leadership. The questions aren't meant to be answered with "yes"—instead, God is gently challenging them to remember that they still have him, even when their earthly leaders fail or their circumstances feel unbearable. The comparison to the pain of childbirth captures something real: sometimes we go through seasons so hard they feel like we're being torn apart, and in those moments we forget we're not actually abandoned. This verse invites us to recognize that when we're lowest, we can turn back to the king and counselor who is always present, even when everything else seems to have fallen away.
