For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk?’

What does Matthew 9:5 mean?

Jesus asks this question to expose something his critics couldn't see. Anyone can claim to forgive sins since no one can verify it happened, but telling a paralyzed person to walk is instantly provable, one way or another. By healing the man's body right in front of everyone, Jesus demonstrates he has the authority to do the invisible work of forgiveness too. He's showing that spiritual healing and physical healing come from the same source, and that source is him. If you're struggling to believe Jesus can truly transform what's broken inside you, this moment reminds us that he backs up his promises with real, undeniable power.
