What does Matthew 8:33 mean?
When Jesus cast demons out of two men and sent them into a herd of pigs, the swine stampeded into the sea and drowned. The people tending those pigs saw this shocking event unfold and ran straight to town to report what they'd witnessed. They told the whole story, holding nothing back about the possessed men and the destroyed animals. What's striking here is the reaction: rather than curiosity about who Jesus was or what this miracle meant, the town's first impulse was alarm about their economic loss. These herders became the first messengers of Jesus's power in this region, but they spread the news as a warning or complaint rather than as good news. Sometimes when God moves in our lives in unexpected ways, our immediate reaction is fear or concern about what we're losing, rather than openness to what he might be doing.
