What does Matthew 8:30 mean?
This seemingly simple detail marks an important shift in the famous story of Jesus calming a demon-possessed man. Jesus has just arrived on the other side of the Sea of Galilee in Gentile territory, and immediately encounters someone suffering terribly from spiritual oppression. The pigs grazing nearby tell us we're in non-Jewish land, since Jewish law forbade raising pigs as unclean animals. What happens next (the demons entering the herd and the pigs rushing into the sea) would have been shocking and costly to the local people, yet Matthew includes it to show the reality and power of the spiritual realm breaking into the physical world. Sometimes the hardest parts of following Jesus involve witnessing difficult things we don't fully understand, trusting that his authority over evil is real even when the consequences seem messy or unfair to those around us.
