What does Matthew 8:11 mean?
Jesus is saying that God's kingdom will welcome people from everywhere, not just those who expected to be there. The image of sitting down at a meal with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the founding fathers of God's people, suggests both intimacy and belonging, a place of honor and rest. In Jesus' time, many listeners assumed God's blessings belonged mainly to them as descendants of these patriarchs, but Jesus is expanding that vision dramatically. He's promising that faith and acceptance of God's invitation matter far more than birthright or geography, so people from all corners of the earth will find their home at God's table.
