What does Matthew 7:22 mean?
Jesus is painting a sobering picture of people who were genuinely active in ministry, performing real works in his name, yet still find themselves on the wrong side of eternity. They're not hypocrites pretending to follow him, but people who sincerely believed they were doing his work. The "that day" refers to the final judgment, when all our actions and motivations will be laid bare. What makes this passage so striking is that activity and results aren't enough, Jesus is saying, if the relationship at the heart of it all is missing or broken. The next verse clarifies that he's looking for those who actually know him and do the will of his Father, not just those who perform impressive spiritual acts.
