What does Matthew 6:28 mean?
Jesus invites us to notice something we often miss: the flowers around us are dressed beautifully without any effort of their own. They don't work looms or spin thread, yet they're clothed in color and design that rivals human craftsmanship. He's asking us to really look, to let that observation sink in, because it's meant to calm the worry churning inside us about whether we'll have enough. The point isn't that we should never work or plan. Rather, Jesus is gently pushing back against the anxiety that crowds out trust, the constant mental loop of "what if I don't have enough?" By pointing to lilies, he's showing us that the God who cares for creation's smallest, most temporary details is the same God who cares for you. Sometimes the hardest part of letting go of worry is actually stopping long enough to notice that you're already held.
