““Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”
What does Matthew 6:1 mean?
Jesus isn't saying that helping others is wrong, but that our *motivation* matters deeply. When we give or serve mainly to impress people or build our reputation, we've already gotten our reward in full, right there in their approval and applause. The real reward, Jesus says, comes from God when our hearts are genuinely focused on helping someone in need rather than being noticed. This speaks to something we all wrestle with: it's hard to do good things without at least a small voice whispering that others should know about it. Jesus is inviting us into something quieter and more honest, where the person receiving help and God are the only witnesses. That kind of giving transforms both the giver and the receiver in ways that public recognition never could.
