Matthew 5:29

If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.

What does Matthew 5:29 mean?

Jesus is speaking dramatically here about taking seriously the things that pull us away from God. He's not suggesting literal self-mutilation, but rather emphasizing that we should be willing to make real sacrifices to protect our spiritual health, the way we'd urgently remove something physically dangerous. If something in your life—a habit, a relationship, a constant temptation—consistently leads you away from what matters most, it deserves your honest attention and decisive action. The point is about priority and radical honesty with ourselves. Jesus is saying it's better to lose something we think we need (comfort, a relationship, a pleasure) than to lose our whole selves to patterns that destroy us. Most of us won't need to literally give anything up, but we might need to quit scrolling certain apps, set boundaries with certain people, or walk away from situations that consistently weaken us. The hard truth underneath is that spiritual health sometimes requires letting go of things we don't want to release.
