“Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’””
What does Matthew 4:7 mean?
Jesus is quoting Deuteronomy here, reminding the devil that we don't get to demand God prove himself to us. When the devil suggested Jesus jump from the temple to force God into a rescue, Jesus was saying no, that would be presuming on God's love rather than trusting it. There's a difference between faith, which waits and trusts, and testing, which demands signs and guarantees before we'll believe. This speaks to something many of us struggle with: the impulse to push God to prove he's real or good before we commit to following him, when real trust often means moving forward without that certainty.
