What does Matthew 27:65 mean?
Pilate is giving the chief priests and Pharisees permission to post guards at Jesus's tomb after his crucifixion. He's essentially washing his hands of responsibility, telling them to do whatever they think necessary to prevent the disciples from stealing the body (as they had requested). His tone suggests reluctant compliance, a half-hearted accommodation rather than genuine confidence in the plan. It's a moment that reveals how uncertain everyone was about what was actually happening, even as Jesus had already told his followers he would rise on the third day.
