What does Matthew 27:58 mean?
Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy member of the council who believed in Jesus, made a bold request after the crucifixion. Asking a Roman governor for a condemned criminal's body was countercultural and risky, yet he approached Pilate with his request anyway. Pilate granted it, which allowed Jesus to be buried with dignity rather than left on the cross or thrown into a common grave. This small act of courage meant that Jesus' body was treated with respect and prepared according to Jewish burial customs, fulfilling what the disciples needed to believe in the resurrection.
