What does Matthew 27:40 mean?
These are the words of people mocking Jesus while he hung dying on the cross. They're throwing back at him a claim he'd made about his body being like a temple that would be rebuilt in three days, twisting it into a taunt that demanded he prove himself by performing a miracle to escape death. What's painful about this moment is that Jesus had the power to do exactly what they were asking, yet he chose not to. He stayed on the cross, finishing what he came to do. For anyone watching at that moment, it looked like weakness or failure, but the resurrection three days later would prove it was actually the greatest act of strength and love possible. Sometimes the hardest thing is to trust God's plan when everyone around you is demanding you take a different path.
