What does Matthew 27:28 mean?
The soldiers stationed at Jesus's crucifixion were mocking him as a would-be king. By stripping him naked and draping a scarlet (or purple) robe across his shoulders, they were creating a cruel parody of royal clothing, turning his claim to kingship into a joke. What they meant as ridicule actually points to something true: Jesus really was king, though not in the way they imagined or in a way that would save him from their hands that day.
