What does Matthew 27:18 mean?

Pilate understood what was really driving the religious leaders who brought Jesus before him: they were jealous of his influence and popularity. Jesus had drawn enormous crowds and commanded respect in ways that threatened their own authority and status. Instead of caring about actual justice, these leaders were motivated by spite, which is why they pushed so hard for his execution even when Pilate found no real fault in him. This moment reminds us how destructive envy can be, not just to the envious person but to those around them. When we're driven by jealousy rather than by what's actually right, we can end up doing terrible things and hurting innocent people without even recognizing what we're doing.
