What does Matthew 27:10 mean?
Matthew is quoting the prophet Jeremiah here, connecting Jesus's betrayal to Old Testament prophecy. When Judas threw down the thirty silver coins he'd received for betraying Jesus, the chief priests used that blood money to buy a burial ground for poor strangers, which became known as the potter's field. Matthew saw this as fulfilling what God had spoken through the prophets long before, showing that even the darkest moments of Jesus's story had been woven into God's plan. It's a way of saying that Jesus's death wasn't a surprise to God, and that Scripture itself testified to what was happening.
