What does Matthew 26:71 mean?
Peter had just denied knowing Jesus in front of a servant girl, but stepping outside to the porch doesn't give him safety. Almost immediately, another person recognizes him and calls out his connection to Jesus to the people around the courtyard fire. This is the second denial coming, and Peter's attempt to distance himself from Jesus is unraveling in real time. The repetition here captures something deeply human: when we're afraid and trying to hide who we are or what we believe, it rarely works out the way we hope.
