What does Matthew 26:66 mean?
In this moment, the Jewish council (called the Sanhedrin) has just heard Jesus claim to be the Son of God. The high priest asks them to render judgment, and they vote unanimously that Jesus deserves to die, viewing his claim as blasphemy against God. This scene is the turning point where religious leaders formally condemn Jesus, setting the events of his crucifixion in motion. What's striking is how quickly a crowd can move to judgment when someone challenges their understanding of God or authority. The council believed they were defending God's honor, yet they were actually rejecting God's own son. It's a sobering reminder for us to examine our own certainties, especially when we feel sure someone is wrong or dangerous. Sometimes conviction and certainty can blind us to truth standing right in front of us.
