What does Matthew 26:40 mean?
Jesus had asked his closest friends to stay awake and pray with him in the garden just before his arrest, knowing what lay ahead would be unbearable to face alone. When he returns to find them sleeping, he speaks directly to Peter, the one who had promised most fiercely that he would never abandon Jesus. The question isn't really a demand for an explanation, but an expression of deep loneliness and disappointment, like someone saying "I needed you, and you weren't there for me." It's a tender, painful moment that reminds us how hard it is to stay present with others in their darkest hours, and how much our showing up matters, even when all we can offer is our wakefulness and company.
