What does Matthew 26:34 mean?
Peter had just promised Jesus that he would stand by him, even if it meant dying alongside him. But Jesus knew something Peter didn't know about himself yet, and he spoke this hard truth with absolute certainty. Before the night was over, Peter would be so afraid that he would tell people he'd never even known Jesus, not once but three times. What makes this moment tender underneath its difficulty is that Jesus wasn't condemning Peter in advance. He was being honest with him. And later, after Peter's failure and his deep regret, Jesus would restore him completely, asking him three times, "Do you love me?" It's a reminder that knowing our own weakness beforehand, and being known in it, is sometimes exactly what we need to move toward genuine faith rather than brittle pride.
