What does Matthew 25:32 mean?
Jesus is describing the final judgment, when all people will stand before him and be divided based on how they lived. The image of a shepherd sorting sheep from goats would have been immediately familiar to his listeners, since both animals grazed together but needed to be separated at day's end, each heading to different shelter. The sheep, valued for wool and milk, represent those who lived with compassion and justice; the goats represent those who neglected the suffering and vulnerable. What makes this picture striking is that the separation happens at the very end, after all of history, and it applies to entire nations and peoples, not just individuals. It's a sobering reminder that how we treat the hungry, sick, imprisoned, and excluded matters deeply to God.
