What does Matthew 25:1 mean?
Jesus is beginning a parable about being ready and watchful for his return. In a Jewish wedding of that era, the bride's friends would gather with lamps to welcome the bridegroom when he arrived at night, then escort him to the celebration. By using this familiar image, Jesus is saying that his followers should approach their faith with the same kind of prepared alertness and anticipation, knowing that his return matters deeply and will come at an unexpected time.
