What does Matthew 24:43 mean?
Jesus is painting a picture here about the value of being ready and alert. He's saying that if a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he'd stay awake and protect his property. The point isn't about actual thieves and houses, though, it's about spiritual preparedness. Since we don't know when Christ will return, we need to live in a constant state of watchfulness, keeping our hearts and minds oriented toward God rather than getting so caught up in daily life that we forget what matters most. It's an invitation to live intentionally, not anxiously, knowing that being spiritually alert is one of the best ways to honor the life we've been given.
