What does Matthew 23:36 mean?
Jesus is speaking here about the consequences of rejecting the prophets and messengers God has sent throughout Israel's history. He's saying that the accumulated weight of this rejection, all the way back to Abel, will fall upon the people of his own time, and that they will face serious judgment. This is a difficult saying, partly because it raises questions about collective responsibility and divine justice. But in its context, Jesus isn't pronouncing some arbitrary punishment. He's describing what naturally follows when a community consistently turns away from God's call to repentance and righteousness. The religious leaders he's addressing have actively opposed God's message, and Jesus is warning them that this resistance has real consequences that their generation will experience.
