“You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?”
What does Matthew 23:19 mean?
Jesus is calling out the religious leaders for their twisted priorities. They were teaching people that if you made a gift to the altar at the temple, the altar itself somehow made the gift sacred and binding, which meant people felt obligated to follow through even if it caused hardship to their families. Jesus points out the obvious: the altar only matters because of what's offered on it, not the other way around. The gift has value independent of the altar's supposed power to sanctify it. He's saying their logic is backwards and spiritually blind, that they've gotten so caught up in rules and systems that they've lost sight of what actually matters. The real point is that integrity, honesty, and caring for people should come before religious formulas and obligations.
