What does Matthew 22:45 mean?

Jesus asks this question to challenge the Pharisees' understanding of who the Messiah truly is. They've been confidently claiming that the Messiah will be descended from David, but Jesus points out a logical puzzle: if David himself calls this future descendant "Lord" (quoting from Psalm 110), how can he merely be David's son? The question suggests something deeper than earthly lineage is at work. Jesus isn't denying the genealogical connection, but rather hinting that the Messiah's identity and authority surpass what a simple parent-child relationship could explain. It's an invitation to think beyond human categories and recognize that the promised one would be something far greater than expected.
