What does Matthew 22:37 mean?
Jesus is answering a teacher of the law who asked which commandment matters most. Rather than listing rules or restrictions, Jesus points to love—complete, wholehearted love for God. The phrase "with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind" isn't describing three separate loves but rather emphasizing that this love should involve everything you are: your emotions and longings, your deepest self, and your thinking and convictions. What makes this beautiful is that Jesus doesn't demand this love reluctantly or threaten punishment for falling short. He's describing what human flourishing actually looks like: when your whole self, integrated and undivided, turns toward the God who made you.
