What does Matthew 22:23 mean?

The Sadducees were a Jewish group who rejected the idea of life after death, so they were testing Jesus with a trick question to prove their point. They're introduced here so you understand what they believed and why their challenge matters. This wasn't a genuine search for truth but an attempt to make Jesus look foolish by using an extreme hypothetical scenario about resurrection (which you'll see unfold in the next verses). What's worth noticing is that even those who opposed Jesus' teachings felt compelled to engage with him, which says something about how seriously people took his message.
