Matthew 21:45
βWhen the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he spoke about them.β
What does Matthew 21:45 mean?
The religious leaders listening to Jesus recognized themselves in his stories about corrupt vineyard managers and rejected messengers. Instead of letting that recognition lead them to honest self-reflection, they felt exposed and threatened. Jesus had a way of using everyday situations, vineyards and weddings and farmers, to hold up a mirror to people's hearts, and those in power often didn't like what they saw reflected back. Sometimes the hardest moment in faith is when we realize a difficult truth applies to us personally, not just to someone else.
