What does Matthew 21:41 mean?
The religious leaders who heard Jesus's parable about the vineyard and the wicked tenants answered their own condemnation without realizing it. When Jesus asked what the vineyard owner would do to tenants who killed his son, they declared that such murderers deserved destruction and that the vineyard would be given to others who would actually care for it and share the harvest. Jesus was describing what would happen to the Jewish religious establishment that rejected him, but the beauty of this moment is how it reveals the human capacity to recognize injustice clearly when we're not the ones being judged. The leaders understood perfectly that unfaithfulness deserves consequences and that God's work would continue with or without those who refuse to honor him.
