What does Matthew 20:15 mean?
In this passage, the landowner is responding to workers who feel cheated because they all received the same daily wage, regardless of how long they worked. He's asking whether he has the right to be generous with his own money, and then he poses a second question with real bite: "Is your eye evil because I am good?" That phrase about an evil eye was a common way in that culture to describe jealousy or resentment. The deeper point here is about how we react when God (or anyone) extends grace that seems unfair by worldly standards. When someone else receives blessing we think they don't deserve, do we resent the giver's generosity, or can we accept that God's kindness isn't always distributed the way our sense of fairness would dictate? It's a uncomfortable mirror held up to our hearts, especially when we're tired or struggling and watching others blessed in ways we're not.
