What does Matthew 2:22 mean?
Joseph had already been warned once by a dream to flee Herod's murderous rage with baby Jesus. After Herod died, it seemed safe to return home to Judea, but Joseph learned that Archelaus, Herod's son, had inherited the throne and was ruling with similar cruelty. Fear gripped him again, and another dream redirected him north to Galilee instead, where his family would be safer. This moment captures something many people know from experience: even when one danger passes, new threats can emerge, and we have to adjust our plans. Joseph's willingness to trust his dreams and stay alert to God's guidance, rather than stubbornly stick to his original plan, protected Jesus and shows us that following God sometimes means being flexible and responsive to changing circumstances. Sometimes safety and obedience point us in unexpected directions.
