Matthew 18:28
““But that servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, who owed him one hundred denarii, and he grabbed him, and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’”
What does Matthew 18:28 mean?
Right after being forgiven an enormous debt himself, this servant hunts down a coworker who owes him far less and demands payment with shocking aggression. The contrast is meant to sting: the first servant has just experienced mercy beyond measure, yet he turns around and shows none. A denarius was a day's wage, so this coworker's debt was real but modest compared to what the first servant had owed. The grabbing and throat-grabbing show how our hardness toward others can come right on the heels of receiving grace, often without us even noticing the contradiction. Jesus is showing us how quickly we forget what we've been given when we're focused on what we're owed.
