What does Matthew 18:24 mean?
A servant who owed his king an enormous debt was brought forward to settle accounts. A talent was an ancient unit of weight used to measure precious metals, so ten thousand of them represented an impossibly vast sum, more than anyone could repay in a lifetime. This opening of Jesus's parable sets up a stark contrast: the servant is about to learn what it means to receive forgiveness when he himself owes what can never be repaid. The sheer size of the debt is intentional, meant to show us how far beyond our ability it is to make things right on our own.
