What does Matthew 18:22 mean?

When Peter asks if forgiving someone seven times is enough, Jesus responds by pushing the number far beyond what seems reasonable, to a number that's impossible to count or track. He's not giving us a math problem but rather saying that forgiveness shouldn't have a limit we're secretly keeping score of. The point is that if we're constantly calculating when we can finally stop forgiving, we're not really forgiving at all, we're just waiting for permission to hold a grudge. Jesus is calling us toward a kind of forgiveness that flows naturally from a heart that's been transformed by grace.
